Tarek Hassanein, MD, FACP, FACG, AGAF, FAASLD, is a board-certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology. Dr. Hassanein specializes in treating viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease and cirrhosis, and in caring for patients before and after liver transplantation. Dr. Hassanein is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Hassanein was instrumental in establishing three major liver transplant programs.
Deanna L. Oliver
MD, MBA Chief, Inpatient Hepatology Services
Dr. Oliver is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine. She received her BS in Biology from University of California San Diego, and her MBA from Webster University, and her Doctor of Medicine from AUC School of Medicine. Dr. Oliver finished her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California Fresno and became the Chief Resident and then Assistant Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
Prior to joining SCLC, she participated in the care of patients with COVID-19, helping to develop the first Hospital-at-Home Program in California at Adventist Hospital system. She joined SCLC as a Consultant Hepatologist and is the Chief of Inpatient Hepatology Services. Dr. Oliver has extensive experience in liver research and is the Associate Director of Research at Southern California Research Center. Her focus is on the management of end stage liver disease and directs the Palliative Care Program at SCLC.
Noha Abdelgelil
MD
Dr. Noha Abdelgelil, MD, is a distinguished internal medicine physician with specialized expertise in the management of fatty liver disease and obesity. She earned her medical degree from Cairo University and went on to complete her residency in internal medicine at Broward Health in affiliation with Florida Atlantic University, where she was honored as Chief Resident by faculty and peers for her outstanding leadership and clinical acumen.
Dr. Abdelgelil’s approach is rooted in providing long-term, patient-centered care through evidence-based treatments and personalized lifestyle interventions. Her commitment to advancing the field is reflected in her active involvement in clinical trials, aimed at exploring innovative treatment options for her patients. With a focus on holistic and comprehensive management, Dr. Abdelgelil is dedicated to improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
Nabil Baig

Dr. Nabil Baig, DO is a board-certified internal medicine physician who currently practices at the Southern California Liver and GI Centers, with locations in Eastlake and El Cajon, CA. He specializes in treating a variety of liver and gastrointestinal diseases, including viral hepatitis (B, C, and D), autoimmune hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Dr. Baig’s extensive experience and focus on comprehensive liver care make him an integral part of the multidisciplinary team at the center.
He collaborates with other specialists and primary care providers to offer patients a holistic and coordinated approach to managing liver diseases. His practice is part of a larger network that emphasizes both traditional and advanced treatment modalities, including non-invasive diagnostic tools such as FibroScan for liver stiffness assessment
Maryam Yasso
MSN, APRN, FNP-C
Maryam Yasso, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She received he bachelor's degree in Nursing from Ohio University, and her master's degree from National University. Prior to joining SCLC, She was able to gather ten years of experience in the medical field, working in a variety of settings—from working with pediatric population with the outpatient clinic at Radly Childrens to the medical/surgical unit at Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she worked with adult and older adult populations. She joined SCLC as a Nurse Practitioner working with our diverse Hepatology and Gastroenterology patients. Maryam is also a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Jim Johnson

Jim is a board certified Physician Assistant with special interest in gastroenterology with a focus on liver diseases including viral hepatitis, hepatic steatosis, autoimmune liver disease and cirrhosis. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife, running and surfing.
Anna Marie Hefner
PhD, MaEd, CPNP
Anna Marie Hefner PhD, MaEd, RN, CPNP is a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and expert nurse in the field of Hepatology, specializing in fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Anna Marie is an Associate Professor at Azusa Pacific University, School of Nursing, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Anna received her Masters of Science in Nursing from California State University in Long Beach, and her Masters of Arts, Education, and Special Education at Azusa Pacific University. Anna Marie completed her Doctorate in Nursing at the University of San Diego, with an emphasis in nutritional status of the patient with end-stage liver disease.
Anna Marie is the Director of the NASH-ville clinics at SCLC. Anna Marie has received three consecutive mid-level professional awards for her work on facilitating lifestyle changes to manage progressive fatty liver disease from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Anna Marie is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

With over 15 years of experience in healthcare, Eric is skilled in diagnosing and managing acute and chronic conditions, promoting wellness, and providing patient-centered care. Known for excellent communication skills and a commitment to patient education, he works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality care tailored to each patient’s needs.
